Mother's Day is this Sunday so I thought it made sense to feature this unique family necklace which I designed recently.

I was commissioned by a Toronto client to create a one of a kind, family birthstone pendant as a very special surprise gift. The "must haves" were that it needed to be 18K yellow gold, of vertical orientation and it was to house a 0.75 ct diamond in addition to the family's birthstone gems.  

Since this was going to be a substantial investment and since I did not have any input from the actual future wearer of the pendant during the design stage, I suggested that my client present the concept sketches on the intended occasion. That way, the recipient could be part of the process to ensure that the piece would be something that would truly be treasured and enjoyed.

As I could not have a conversation to deduce general style preferences, I created a few concept sketches that satisfied the "must have" features in a variety of jewellery design styles: contemporary, traditional, sculptural, whimsical and ultra-modern/abstract. 

The design of choice was the sculptural family pendant so we proceeded to CAD and sourcing the stones including a round GIA certified diamond with the requested specifications. The pendant was cast and finished in 18K gold and suspended from a wheat style chain. 

I love being able to work with my clients on meaningful pieces that are sure to get passed down to the next generation and become heirlooms. Custom family jewellery definitely falls into that category. And it doesn't just have to be jewellery for mothers.
